Vyjanthimala’s memoir stirs up a storm in Bollywood
Who would have ever thought that after four decades, yesteryear actress Vyjanthimala’s memoirs would ruffle feathers? So while most of us thought that her tell-all memoir Bonding would be a nice walk down memory lane for an actress who has bid goodbye to Bollywood, it has created quite a buzz. Vyjanthimala wrote, “RK was far too enamoured of getting publicity and grab headlines. And that included the rumours that I was romantically involved with him. It was all the manipulative doing of RK banner’s PR drive and unnecessarily spread like wild fire even before one could think of dousing those flames”. At the release of the book, the actress reiterated that there was no affair between her and Raj Kapoor during the making of the film Sangam. “I had to be candid, it was very well-known the way he works, the way he treats his heroines, it was probably done for the film. He did everything for a film. It was a publicity stunt,” said Vyjayantimala. Now, the Kapoor khandaan has hit back. An angry Rishi Kapoor in an interview to a newspaper, has stated that the actress is lying blatantly. He said that his father’s affair with Vyjanthimala had in fact prompted his mother to move out of the house along with his siblings to a hotel for four and a half months. He also added that his father never needed publicity of this kind and that actress was distorting facts. The book has certainly created a stir in tinsel town. From catty revelations of how actress Nargis called her a tree and then advised her to not give autographs, to some more on her own vanity, on how she refused to accept the role of Amitabh Bachchan’s screen mother in Deewar, also about her rejecting a Filmfare award for Devdas, simply because she didn’t think her role as Chandramuki in Devdas was a supporting role. Looks like the rumours that did the rounds in the sixties continue to add more grist to the tabloids even today!
